What is a helix piercing?
A helix piercing is in the upper rim of your ear, in the cartilage. This part of the ear is called the helix – hence the name. It is one of the most versatile places for a piercing, as you can have one, but also several next to each other for a so-called stacked look.
Within the helix, there are also variations: the forward helix is at the front of the ear, close to the head. The double or triple helix is a combination of two or three helix piercings next to each other. Each has its own charm and style.
Does a helix piercing hurt?
Honest answer: yes, a little more than a lob piercing. But it really isn’t that bad. Cartilage is firmer than the soft tissue of your earlobe, so you’ll feel a short, sharp prick followed by a nagging sensation. Most people compare it to a firm pinch.

How long does a helix piercing take to heal?
This is perhaps the most underrated aspect of a helix piercing: the healing time. This is because cartilage heals a lot slower than soft tissue. Count on 6 to 12 months before your helix piercing is fully healed, sometimes even longer.
That sounds like a lot, but in practice you won’t notice much if you take good care of your piercing. The first few weeks the ear is a little sensitive, then it becomes increasingly normal. The difference is in when you can safely change the jewelry.
Golden rules during healing:
- Do not touch your piercing with dirty hands
- Don’t sleep on the side of your new piercing (a travel pillow with a hole helps!)
- Clean daily with saline solution or piercing aftercare spray
- Keep hairspray, shampoo and perfume away
- Do not swim in public water for the first few months

What shape fits a helix piercing?
The most commonly chosen options for a helix:
- Labret / flatback – a bar with a flat back. This is the most comfortable option for a new helix piercing because nothing sticks out the back.
- Ring (clicker or seamless ring) – a classic look. Usually recommended to be worn only once the piercing is fully healed.

What does a stacked ear look like with a helix?
A stacked ear or curated ear is a composite look where multiple piercings in and around the ear combine to form a whole. The helix is a perfect addition to this, especially when combined with:
- A tragus or daith piercing
- One row of lob piercings (first, second and third holes)

Frequently asked questions about the helix piercing
- Can I get a helix piercing if I wear glasses?
Yes, you can. The helix sits high enough on the ear to generally not interfere with a spectacled leg. However, the ear may be a bit more sensitive to pressure during the first few weeks. Discuss this with your piercer if you are unsure.
- Can I change my helix piercing if it is not yet healed?
No – this is a common mistake. A piercing that looks good has not yet healed inside. Wait at least 6 months, preferably a year. Then come in for a professional downsizing or jewelry change at Inkorporated – it’s always safer than fiddling yourself.
- What if my helix piercing gets a bump?
A small bump (piercing bump) is quite normal and often a reaction to pressure or irritation. It usually disappears on its own with proper care. Don’t go pinching or treating it yourself – rather come in for a check-up.

- What jewelry is in my helix at the time of setting?
